KOTA KINABALU: Sabah authorities have issued five notices to traders for hiking the prices of electronic appliances.

State Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry director Georgie Abas said, during the operation, they checked items such as desktop and laptop computers, printers and smartphones.

"During Op Catut 8.0 which started yesterday, we inspected five premises and issued five notices to traders suspected of increasing the price of items.

"The inspection at premises selling electronic appliances around Kota Kinabalu was done as these items, especially laptops, are in high demand," he said in a statement.

Georgie added that the notices were served to get more details on selling prices and costs for further investigations into whether traders were profiteering from the current situation.

The business owners are given two days to provide the necessary information to the authorities.

"The operation, which will be held until Feb 8, is meant to prevent any wrongdoings or price manipulation following the need for online studies for students that started on Jan 20.

"We would like to remind all business owners not to mark up prices of these electronic gadgets to unreasonable rates.

"Should they be found to gain excessive profits, action under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 will be taken."
