KOTA BELUD: The Sabah government will get to the root of chronic flooding at Kuala Abai, here.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said that the shallow river mouth is among the reasons for frequent flash floods in the district.

He revealed that flooding was a rare occasion here until the Mount Kinabalu earthquake incident in 2015.

"Sand dredging to deepen rivers, particularly at Kuala Abai, has been identified as among actions to address flash floods here.

"We will give the sand dredging contract to credible and capable local contractors that will be undertaken as a joint-venture effort with state government-linked companies," he said.

Hajiji was speaking to reporters after visiting flood victims at a temporary shelter in Dewan Tun Said Keruak here.

Earlier, the Chief Minister was briefed on the district's flood situation, which occurred after continuous downpours on Jan 16.

There are 240 people from 38 villages being housed at five temporary shelters in the district.

Hajiji handed over assistance to the victims consisting of food and cash.

He also advised residents, particularly those in low-lying and flood-prone areas, to take extra precautions given the on-going bad weather.

Accompanying the Chief Minister were Minister of Community Development and People's Wellbeing Datuk Shahelmy Yahya; state Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong; as well as the three assemblymen in the Kota Belud parliamentary constituency: Datuk Seri Salleh Said (Usukan), Fairuz Renddan (Pintasan) and Mohd Arsad Bistari (Tempasuk).
