RANAU: Sabah state Tourism, Culture and Environment minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin regards the killing of elephants in the state as a criminal act.
He was responding to the latest killing of a pachyderm, which was found shot and brutally hacked into several parts in central Sabah's Tongod district on Thursday.
"We look at elephant killings as a serious offence against animals. The relevant authorities should investigate them and bring the criminals to justice.
"We do not want these animals to become extinct, especially since elephants are a protected species," he told the reporters after inspecting a collapsed road at Kinabalu Park here.
It was reported that the pygmy elephant, aged between 5 and 7, could have died almost a week before estate workers reported the incident to authorities.
It was shot at least seven times with four bullets found in the skull of the mammal.
Half of the pachyderm's carcass was also skinned, while its severed head and tusks were found elsewhere.
The Sabah Wildlife Department is still investigating the case, which is suspected to be a retaliatory killing.
Two other recent cases of elephant killings in the state involve a calf in the Bahagad area of Lahad Datu, and another in Kinabatangan.
