KOTA KINABALU: Contractors in Sabah have been urged to speed up their road construction work as there are less cars on the road during the Movement Control Order (MCO).

Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin was referring to the road upgrading project along Jalan UMS to the Indah Permai junction in the state capital.

He said the state Public Works Ministry stated that their target to date was supposed to be at 60 per cent completion but the contractor is only at 55 per cent.

"The road upgrading project consists the expansion from four to six lanes as well as the construction of a flyover at the junction at Kingfisher, UMS, Rampayan and Indah Permai.

"We understand that the MCO and the modification work of the pipe system are among the contributing factors to the delay.

"However, we hope that the contractor involved could speed up work during this time as there is less traffic on the roads now," said Bung, who is also the state Works Minister, noting that the site is usually jammed during peak hours.

Meanwhile, on several water disruption issues at villages in Sepanggar, Bung said this was due to water theft that led to low pressure, thus affecting consumers.

He said such incidences caused an inconvenience not just to the people but also in millions of ringgit in losses for the government.

"I will ask the Water Department and other agencies to monitor the situation and take proactive action in cutting illegal water connections.

"Community leaders should also form a special committee to collect data on villagers who have water meters.

"Such a measure will ensure that there are no illegal water connections among villagers.
