KOTA KINABALU: One of the most anticipated events in the state capital is moving online amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
Jesselton Artisan Market (JAM), which is usually held every two months, went live on the internet yesterday.
Since its inception in 2017, the market, which had been held at The Walk, Riverson here, has attracted thousands of visitors.
Organising person Aaron Lam said due to the Movement Control Order (MCO), they thought that it would better instead to have a virtual market.
He said there is more work involved in organising a virtual event, but it brings more convenience for market-goers.
"JAM online is (therefore) a good opportunity for us to reach people outside of KK and other parts of Malaysia.
"People from everywhere can experience the market in the comfort of their homes.
"Our followers have said that they love how the online market is presented online, and they still feel connected with their favourite artisans' goods," he told the New Straits Times.
Lam said people from outside of Sabah could also join in JAM's e-commerce platforms instead of personally contacting the vendors.
JAM's is a curated showcase of Kota Kinabalu's skilled artisans and their creations, from decorative arts, jewellery, furniture, clothing and food items to handmade creations, among others.
Apart from the visual presentation of the market and custom-designed booths for each vendor, another highlight is online performances featuring local musicians.
Lam added that they also encouraged online shoppers to give donations to the artistes.
"We want to build a culture of appreciating and contributing to the growth of our local musicians.
"Of course, the whole goal of the market is also to encourage people to support our local businesses in difficult times like these."
The market is also selling an online workshop package in making face masks.
