KOTA KINABALU: Sabah opposition lawmakers will receive a financial allocation to take care of the needs of their constituents in weathering the effects from Covid-19.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said 31 opposition assemblymen will receive RM100,000 each for the purpose, with the total allocation amounting to RM3.1 million.
"I would like to give this special allocation as proof that Gabungan Rakyat Sabah is a government that cares for the people.
"Such an allocation is also in line with the government (position) to ensure people facing the pandemic challenges are being assisted well," he said.
He said this in a statement after launching the appointment letters to native chiefs and other community leaders for Sulaman and Pantai Dalit constituency.
Hajiji, who is also state finance minister, said the special allocation would be channelled to the opposition assemblymen via the district offices.
In his speech earlier, he said he hoped that the newly-appointed members would help the government to realise the people's aspirations and develop Tuaran.
"I am hoping that the appointed chiefs will play their roles and execute their duty with full responsibility especially in the affair of the native court.
"It is the same with Chinese community leaders and village chiefs to conduct their responsibility professionally regardless of political beliefs, religions and races at the respective areas.
"As leaders who are close to the community, be the ears and eyes for the government to get to know the problems faced by the people," he added.
