RANAU: Despite having to spend more for Covid-19 swab tests, people are willing, just to climb Mount Kinabalu here.

Kinabalu Park assistant director Yassin Miki said the reopening of the mountain today saw registration of 34 climbers accompanied by 10 mountain guides.

"The registration process went smoothly with staff and climbers following the standard operating procedures," he told the New Straits Times.

Previously, Sabah Parks had stated that climbers need to undergo a swab test three days before climbing activities.

The management said it would only accept RTK-Antigen, PT-PCR and screening tests approved by the Health Ministry.

Only climbers with negative Covid-19 results would be allowed to register and climb the mountain.

The tests, which are to be borne by the climbers, apply for climbing activities and those who stay overnight at Panalaban or Gurkha Hut.

"The payment (for climbing) remains the same as before, it is just that the climbers have to bear the additional costs for swab tests.

"The climbing permit for locals is RM50 and RM200 for foreigners," he told the New Straits Times.

Yassin added that 33 of them made the booking while another one is a walk-in climber.

With the daily quota for climbing Mount Kinabalu 100 people at a time, the public can climb the mountain without booking as long as they turn up with negative Covid-19 results or have been immunised before 10am.
