Everyone's responsible to ensure political stability, says PM

KOTA KINABALU: The government needs the people to participate in finding solutions that will lead to political stability.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the country was facing three main challenges - the Covid-19 pandemic, economy and political instability.

He said these challenges, particularly political instability, would affect the economy in terms of drawing in foreign investments.

"I recognise that we are facing (these challenges), therefore as political leaders in the Perikatan Nasional, we are doing (our job) in creating a sense of stability. We need to initiate that, not others.

"But, we also need others to be participate in (formulating) solutions to rectify the political instability in the country.

"There is no single party which can administer the country with political stability and harmony without the cooperation of everyone," he said, adding both the ruling party and opposition had roles in ensuring stability.

Muhyiddin was speaking at a town hall session for Shared Prosperity Vision 2030 (MKB 2030) at the State Administrative Centre here.

He was responding to a question from the floor on the government's efforts to regain the people's confidence.

Muhyiddin also assured the people that the general election would be held "when the time comes".

On question on integrity and eradication of corruption among civil servants, Muhyiddin said such matter remained the government's top priorities.

"As a government which emphasises integrity, we continuously look into any kind of corruption or power abuse. We make it a priority and set key performance indicators (in measures taken to eradicate corruption).

"That is why we have decided to going all out for our Anti-Corruption Plan, which is now implemented at all levels where all the heads of ministries and agencies have signed on to fight corruption.

"This is something we won't compromise as we have been given the trust by the people to govern the country," said Muhyiddin, who also chairs the Cabinet Special Committee on Anti-Corruption (JKKMAR).

Also present at the session were Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Senior Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Special Functions) Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof, among others.
