KOTA KINABALU: Sabah will allow non-convention ships from Indonesia and Philippines to enter the Eastern Sabah Security zone waters starting Friday.
Since the state-wide Conditional Movement Control Order on Oct 13, the ships were suspended from conducting barter trade economy and transhipment activities to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, however, said businessmen involved in the economic activities were facing difficulties in using convention ships as the South Philippines does not have such facilities at its ports.
"After going through assessment and considerations from the state and federal agencies via a meeting with the State Security Working Committee yesterday, the government has agreed to allow non-convention ships to enter Eastern Sabah Security zone waters starting Friday.
"All economic players in this sector have to abide by the standard operating procedures (SOP) to prevent new clusters in future," he said in a statement.
Hajiji, who is also state Finance Minister, added that among the SOP included use of designated routes, crew free from Covid-19 and no landing party.
The unloading process also need to be handled by local companies.
"It is hoped with such permission, all businessmen and entrepreneurs involved in this barter trade and transhipment will be able to contribute to the state economy." he said.
