KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested a self-employed man for trying to offer bribe to a government official over a wildlife offence.
The New Straits Times learnt that the 50-year-old man had offered RM5,000 to the official as an inducement to lighten sentences of his friend who had been arrested for keeping wild animals.
Among the animals involved include sun bears, pigeons, hedgehogs, eagles, pythons, 'burung tiong', wild boars and others.
Those animals are suspected to be kept illegally for medical purposes.
He was arrested at 5.30pm at the Sabah MACC office here yesterday.
Sabah MACC director S.Karunanithy confirmed the matter.
The suspect is being investigated under Section 16 (b)(B) of the MACC Act 2009. The man was later released on a RM8,000 MACC bail with two local sureties.
