KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) has welcomed the use of digital identity cards to solve the problem of fake MyKads.
SAPP Youth chief Jamain Sarudin, however, said for Sabah a different approach should be used.
He also said digital identity cards would not resolve problems of illegal immigrants in Sabah being issued with MyKad.
"Sabah has a foreign population consisting large numbers of illegal immigrants numbering hundreds of thousands.
"The state needs a different mechanism and it is time to introduce Sabah IC for genuine Sabahans.
"It is not a replacement to MyKad but as a guarantee that the identity of local Sabahans are protected, regardless of race and religion," he said in a statement.
In 2012, Jamain said the idea of Sabah IC was brought up by SAPP to address the issue of MyKad owned by foreigners and illegal immigrants.
A Royal Commission of Inquiry on illegal immigrants (RCI) reported widespread issuance of identity cards through dubious means via Projek IC which changed the demographics of Sabah as a whole.
"These dubious MyKad holders were found in the Sabah electoral lists, sometimes referred as 'phantom voters'."
Jamain, who is also the Deputy Youth Chief of the Perikatan Nasional Malaysia, added that Sabah IC must have its own characteristics and privileges.
Among them are entering higher institutes of learning, holding government positions, owning a business licence and owning native lands.
