KOTA KINABALU: Sabah will close its borders with Labuan with immediate effect to prevent the spread of the Indian variant of Covid-19.
State Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said following the detection of the variant in Labuan, Sabah will not allow people to pass through its borders with Labuan.
However, exceptions would be made for movement involving essential services and goods, security and healthcare which have obtained special approvals.
"Public ferry transportation would be for essential services and goods only. Even permission for long-distance relationship spouses will not be granted starting May 28 until June 7," he said in a statement.
Sabah recorded 229 Covid-19 cases with one death in Kota Belud today.
Masidi said the significant increase in today's statistics was due to existing clusters such as Jalan Menteri, Lorong Karamunsing, Padawan and screenings of symptomatic close contacts.
There are two new clusters, both related to Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations, in Tawau and Keningau.
The index case for the Sungai Pukul cluster in Tawau is a 63-year-old housewife who tested positive on May 22. Seven of her family members are also infected. The cluster has 18 cumulative cases.
In Keningau, the Kauran-Durok cluster involved a 30-year-old woman who came back to Sabah from Selangor between May 12 until 22, when the interstate and inter-district travel were banned.
"Based on initial information, the index case might have been infected during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration between May 19 and 20. A close contact screening found 12 out of 31 positive, with four from Kampung Kauran and eight from Kampung Durok."
