KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Law Society (SLS) is rolling out the first charter in the country for women advancement in the legal profession.
Its president Roger Chin said the charter also includes provisions encouraging the establishment of fair and transparent sexual discrimination and harassment complaints processes.
It is also designed to promote and support strategies to retain women including those with disability, and to encourage as well as promote their career progression into senior executive and management positions.
"Notwithstanding that, in recent years the percentage of women entering the legal profession has far outweighed that of men.
"When a closer look is taken at statistics overall, men still outnumber women, especially so in longer number of years of practice," he said in a joint statement with SLS Women and Children's' Rights sub-committee chairperson Datin Mary Gomez.
Chin said that the society had conducted an informal survey and found that the legal profession was still very much male dominated and thus the inability to truly accommodate women in the profession to enable a balancing of expectations, family and work for women.
He also said law firms could sign up to the charter and pledge their commitment via leadership to remove gender bias and discrimination in the legal workplace.
He said signatories would also have to encourage and facilitate flexible work practices to support a better balance of the profession itself and other commitments.
