KOTA KINABALU: Vaccination promotion in Sabah needs to be ramped-up aggressively following the poor inoculation rate in the East Malaysian state.
As of June 3, only 152,900 or 5.21 per cent of targeted vaccinated groups have received their vaccination.
On vaccination registration, 575,326 people or only 19.6 per cent of the total Sabah population have signed up for the programme.
Parti Warisan Sabah deputy wira chief Mohd Ismail Ayob said while the Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin's initiative to vaccinate illegal immigrants was commendable, inoculation focus should also be aimed at citizens.
"I praise Hamzah's effort in looking for immigrants and to give vaccines to them, but based on the study by the Health Ministry, Sabah is the state with the lowest vaccine recipients.
"He (Hamzah) should have advised the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah government to look for people in the interiors of Sabah to be give vaccine to and raise awareness for the village people to register for the vaccine," he said in a statement.
Ismail added that this was the time for leaders to venture into the interiors, just like how they did during elections, to promote vaccination as it involves the safety and health of everyone.
Meanwhile, he also questioned why Sabah was not listed as one of the states to receive the AstraZeneca vaccine.
He said as the federal government had sidelined the people of Sabah to opt-in for the vaccine twice, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor owed an explanation to the people.
