KOTA KINABALU: United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) Youth chief Felix Joseph Saang today reminded the government to be consistent in handling the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.
He said the people were fed up with the uncertain and confusing decisions, as well as the 'total lockdown' implementation, which leaves much to be desired.
"The total lockdown should be fully implemented, not partially. However, what is happening now is that 128,150 companies have just been allowed to operate.
"Has the government still not learned from its experience? From the Movement Control Order (MCO) to the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) to many other types of MCO.
"Even an emergency has been declared. The cases should have dropped but we just heard that another 8,209 cases were recorded yesterday. The death toll is also very high," he said in a statement.
Felix had also questioned the recent statistics issued by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), which showed an absurd movement of passengers during an emergency.
"According to the report, in April, a total of 548,000 international passengers and 1.4 million Malaysian passengers arrived in the country.
"This means that, in that month alone, the MAHB airport network recorded the entry of nearly two million people. This does not even include the other months.
"The people are all wondering. What is the meaning of an emergency? What is the real motive of the government?
"On top of that, almost all the shopping malls, entertainment centres, gambling centres, leisure centres, sports centres and public areas were open during the emergency. To me, this is the sign of a very embarrassing failure," he said.
Felix, who is also the Upko Beluran chief said that the failure of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) governments here in the Land Below The Wind was evident in the confusing standard operating procedures (SOP).
"One minute you're allowed to do this, the next you're not. In another two days, it will change again. This didn't only happen twice, it happened time and time again.
"They claimed that it's a total lockdown, but the truth is, 1.57 million people have been allowed to work. This doesn't even include the public's movement.
"As an example, initially the permission to cross the district could only be obtained from the International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti). This was suddenly changed and now you can obtain the permission elsewhere (not just Miti).
"Decisions should be made only after a thorough consideration of all aspects. If you want to impose a total lockdown, you must do it right. If you want to declare an emergency, you must do it right," stressed Felix.
