TUARAN: A community centre here, which provides occupational training and boarding for people with disabilities, has received help within a day after raising a white flag yesterday morning.
Pusat Amal Latihan dan Amali OKU Sabah manager Azman Sadin said as the picture went viral, he was grateful many individuals and non-governmental organisations came forward to give them donations.
He said prior to that, it was getting tough for residents at the centre.
While it initially had 22 people with various disabilities and health issues, the centre had to cut down the number to only nine people as they could not afford to feed such a large number of people.
The other 13 people had to return to their respective families and homes.
Azman said it has been tough as the nine people who remained at the centre were surviving only on porridge as their food supply was depleting.
"We put up the flag following advice we received from a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist told us to get help instead of feeling depressed about the situation, or resorting to doing something extreme.
"It was indeed a difficult time for us as we could not sell our custom-made furniture during the Movement Control Order (MCO), either via our online or real-time methods," Azman told the New Straits Times.
He said the centre has taken down the flag after getting assistance.
