KOTA KINABALU: The Likas Women and Children's Hospital here has administered Covid-19 vaccine to 23 post-natal mothers.

Its director Dr Marcus Netto said the hospital became the first in the country to carry out the programme.

"The first vaccine given was on July 8 at 11.12am and there were 13 of them on the first day.

"To date, the hospital has vaccinated a total of 23 mothers," he told the New Straits Times.

Dr Marcus added that such programme would encourage expecting, post-delivery and lactating mothers to get the vaccine.

"By ensuring mothers get the vaccines before leaving the hospital, they could have a better immune system to reduce the risk of infection.

"For lactating mothers, they could also give immunity protection to the babies," he said, adding that mothers would not have to travel to the vaccination centre with the inoculation being done in the wards.
