PENSIANGAN: The Kaki-Kaki Kampung programme is now bearing fruit for the Transpegalan community here.
Initiated by member of parliament Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup in September last year, one of the main initiatives was to expand the market for the farmers' crops.
The programme is a collaboration with Tanjung Keramat cooperatives where they go into the villages to buy the crops.
Arthur said that such an approach would help villagers sell their produce without having to go out to the town of Keningau or other districts.
"I am pleased to share the development that we have managed to open a new market for banana growers in the Transpegalan area.
"Now 20 tonnes of banana crops a month will be exported to Johor. I am hoping to increase the export volume to Johor," he said in a Facebook post.
Arthur, who is also deputy minister in the Prime Minister's office for Economic Affairs, targeted 50 tonnes of bananas a month to be exported.
To achieve that, he would start discussions with factories and related industries in Johor to increase banana exports.
"Through this effort, we will increase the market for our local products as well as increase the income of the people.
"I will always find creative ways to improve the people's economy," he said.
