KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has extended appreciation to teachers carrying out their duty during the challenging Covid-19 pandemic period.

Its Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the pandemic has drastically changed teaching methods, forcing them into using digital learning platforms such as the Google Classroom and Zoom applications.

"The government understands the challenges faced by teachers in conducting online classes.

"I realise there are teachers who have to walk on foot for miles just to deliver learning materials to their students while schools are also implementing various ways to ensure school children are not left out from their studies. For this I thank you.

"I call upon the people of Sabah to continue to be respectful to teachers because in this cyber era we often hear many baseless attacks on the teaching profession. In fact, it is difficult for us to repay the deeds and contributions of teachers," he said, during a virtual state Teachers' Day celebration.

Hajiji added the state's topography poses a challenge in ensuring better internet access, creativity on the part of teachers in ensuring lessons reach all students, particularly those without internet access, was appreciated.

He assured that the State Government would continue to closely monitor the education development in Sabah through the related agencies and support all initiatives that have been planned to boost the state's academic achievements.

Among them include addressing the digital communication issues in Sabah by upgrading more than 2,000 telecommunication towers and building 400 new ones under the National Digital Network Plan (Jendela).

Meanwhile, this year's Education Leadership Award went to former State Education Director Datuk Maimunah Suhaibul while the Tokoh Guru award went to Dr Shirley Tay Siew Hong.
