KOTA KINABALU: There will be no single party that can form the government on its own, said former chief minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak.
He said the current political scenario required realignment and compromise from all parties.
"(However), the main focus should be on the recovery. Political parties should think about it and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong would choose the Prime Minister to shoulder the responsibility.
"The new Prime Minister should consider having a smaller Cabinet, skilful and bi-partisan to build stability," said the Usukan state assemblyman in a statement.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin tendered his resignation followed by his cabinet ministers.
However, Muhyiddin has since been appointed by the King as the caretaker Prime Minister pending a new appointment.
Meanwhile, Sabah Law Society president Roger Chin said Malaysia has in the past exemplified partisanship, where a political party adheres only to its interests without compromise, characterised by a lack of cooperation between rival political parties.
"This often gives rise to the danger of a groups pushing its interests to the detriment of the nation.
"The time has come for this nation to put politics aside and consider where we want to head in the future as a democratic jurisdiction.
"It is therefore fervently hoped that whoever becomes the next prime minister, this person will be able to garner enough support for the needed structural changes," he said in a separate statement.
