KOTA KINABALU: City folks here have lauded the newly-launched KK SkyBridge, despite the project having courted controversy on social media.

Clerk, Dayana Aziatie, 25, said the SkyBridge was an ideal way to go shopping from one mall to another.

"We just parked our car at Asia City and walked across using the SkyBridge to the Oceanus Mall.

"However, for now, I would only dare to use this SkyBridge during the day and if there is someone accompanying me," said Dayana, who was out with her friend Nurshafiqkah Nul Hamid for some shopping.

Early this month, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor launched the RM31.5 million project which was delayed for over three years following the bankruptcy of the project's developer in 2018.

The 400-metre bridge was part of the city's SkyBridge Pedestrian Linkages and Traffic Improvement Works project.

It is linked to other malls and commercial hubs such as the Api-Api Commercial Centre, Warisan Square Commercial Centre and Oceanus Waterfront mall, besides Centre Point.

The SkyBridge is also equipped with 20 air-conditioned retail kiosks, escalators and elevators that are friendly to persons with disabilities while also resulting in upgrading works on the surrounding infrastructure.

However, it fell under public scrutiny when one section led to a dead-end of a shopping mall wall and there was no way out except to turn back.

Api Api community development leader Oliver Majaham said the Skybridge encourages city folks to walk instead of drive to buildings next to each other.

"This will lead to reduced congestion and parking problems in these areas. It also protects the users from the sun and rain, making it more comfortable for users to walk to these places.

"The bridge will also make it convenient for the disabled to move around as there are disabled-friendly facilities," he said.

Although some have expressed concern on the security issue, Oliver assured that the public should not be worried as City Hall enforcement personnel are stationed along the bridge
