KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has acknowledged Sabah's needs for more funds, especially after the Penampang district bore the brunt of landslides and floods.

Bad weather had wreaked havoc in the state capital and the adjacent district yesterday, and three people have been killed in the landslides so far.

Many residents have also suffered property damages.

Today, Ismail Sabri presented a mock cheque of RM18,241,250, being the federal government's contribution through the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) to Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Haijiji Noor.

The prime minister arrived this morning for a one-day official visit here.

He was met on arrival by Hajiji, deputy chief minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin and cabinet ministers at Terminal 2, Kota Kinabalu International Airport.

This marks Ismail Sabri's first visit to Sabah since taking office as prime minister on Aug 21.

Accompanying him were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Sabah and Sarawak Affairs) Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili, Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa, and Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee.

In the morning, the prime minister attended a state development briefing by State Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong at Menara Kinabalu on the state's development needs.

Ismail Sabri said in a statement that Sabah would continue to get attention, citing several projects that would be given priority, including people-centric projects such as schools, infrastructure and basic amenities.

At 8pm tonight, the prime minister will launch a low-key Malaysia Day celebration in full compliance of the standard operating procedures (SOP) at the Sabah International Convention Centre.

Sabah is the host for the country's Malaysia Day celebration this year.
