KOTA KINABALU: For nine fully vaccinated adults, they felt lucky to be able to enjoy Sapi island all to themselves without the weekend crowd.

Shahrul Nizam, 22, from Perlis and his nine friends made an impromptu plan to enjoy the sun, sea and sand today.

"I found out from the Sabah Parks page last night that it has reopened its islands.

"Since I had been to the other islands, I choose to go to Sapi Island," he said, adding that all the group members were from the peninsula except one.

Sabah Parks' Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, which is located less than 30 minutes from the Jesselton Point Terminal here, comprises Gaya, Sapi, Manukan, Mamutik and Sulug islands.

When asked whether he was worried of Covid-19 infection, Shahrul said it was a good time to go when there were not much people going to the islands.

As for the chartered boat, which is RM250 for 6 people, he said the rate was acceptable.

The jetty saw only two boats sending the group to the island as of 10.30am.

Meanwhile, sales coordinator Andy Zulkifli at the jetty said very few people were going to the islands after Sabah Parks announced the reopening on Sept 16.

He added the lukewarm response might be because people may not know about the opening of the park yet.

"Perhaps if the authorities were to allow children, there will be more visitors.

"However, the guidelines are only for fully vaccinated, those above 12 and below 70," he said.

Andy added his company is offering RM150 package of parasailing, banana boat, meal and boat fee per pax for now.
