KOTA KINABALU: Tambunan has the cleanest water in the country, said Sabah Water director Edward Lingkapo.

"Tambunan water is so good you do not have to treat it… it is the cleanest water in Malaysia.

"The quality is measured according to the World Health Organisation's international standards," he said.

Edward said this when asked by Institute For Development Studies chief executive officer Anthony Kiob on which water treatment plant in Sabah was best, during a webinar on "Federal RMK12: Addressing Water Supply Issue in Sabah".

Such revelation is in contrast to his earlier statement that the state could no longer fully rely on rivers such as Sungai Padas and Sungai Kinabatanagan as water sources, as they became murky and polluted due to development.

As for the worst among the 84 water plants in the state, Edward pointed to two in Ranau, built in the 1960s, which could last for another 10 years for the district after doing some upgrading works.

He also said the oldest treatment plant would be the one at Ulu Senagang in Keningau which was built in 1955.

Apart from having old facilities, Edward also said that some of its treatment plants are run by diesel generator sets.

"We are 10 to 15 years behind… only now are we playing catch up in the development of water supply.

"Even to build a new water plant, for procurement, it will take at least two years and another year for distribution," he said.
