KOTA KINABALU: Some 20,000 consumers in the west coast of Sabah are experiencing electricity supply disruptions since Thursday.

Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd senior general manager (Asset Management) Idris Mohd Noor said the utility company had received about 3,000 calls and complaints on the matter.

The disruption was due to broken lines and fallen trees following incessant rain in Kota Belud, Kota Kinabalu, Papar, Beaufort, Sipitang and Bongawan.

He said restoration of electricity supply was being carried out in stages after conditions become safer for the utility company's workers.

"Actions have been taken based on priority given the damages that will pose danger to the public, such as broken poles and wires.

"However, there are impassable areas because of flooding or the substations are submerged," he said.

SESB also had to shut off supply to several locations for safety purposes.
