KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) won USD5,000 (RM21,130) for their innovation to reduce agricultural waste from Kundasang farms.
The university undergraduates from the Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (FSMP) won the grand prize of the Rising Star Agri-Food Innovation Challenges (RSIC) 2021 competition with their "ChiVera product".
UMS team advisor and FSMP senior lecturer Dr Rovina Kobun said the competition saw the participation of more than 1,000 students.
Only 16 teams were shortlisted to the Superstar level, namely six teams from Malaysia, six Indonesian teams and four from Thailand.
At the finals, there were only two top winners from each of the three countries. For Malaysia, the second place went to the Xiamen University Malaysia Team.
Rovina said ChiVera's was a spray technology that prolongs the lifespan of fruits and vegetables in Kundasang during the Covid-19 pandemic.
