KOTA KINABALU: Lahad Datu member of parliament Datuk Mohammadin Ketapi had long showed signs of disinterest in Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan).

Warisan supreme council member Azhar Matussin said the party noticed the changes right after the Sheraton Move in February last year, which toppled the then Pakatan Harapan/Warisan government.

"We suspected something was amiss as he seldom (wanted) to be with us, joining party meetings at the division and supreme council levels, nor be with the grassroot community at his constituency.

"There were also rumours of him going to leave the party, details of which I can't divulge," he told the New Straits Times, adding the party was aware of his intention to quit Warisan since last week.

Mohammadin, who is also Segama assemblyman, announced his departure from Warisan yesterday and justified his action as wanting to bring development to his constituents by supporting the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah government.

However, Azhar said based on feedback from grassroot and division committee members, Mohammadin's performance was below par.

"He is a non-performing (former) minister and elected representative. In fact, he had to be covered by other assemblymen in the Lahad Datu parliamentary constituency.

"Therefore, his departure from Warisan brings no meaning to the grassroot as he was rarely there for the people," said Azhar who is also Darau assemblyman, adding the party had met with the grassroot at the Lahad Datu constituency this morning to explain the latest political situation.

When asked whether the departure of three senior politicians in the party was because of internal squabble, he denied and said it is unlikely that other assemblymen would follow suit.

"(As for the rest of the assemblymen), we are close with each other and often have a gathering in which we will talk about who is being offered (to cross party).

"Unlike the experienced politicians with a lot of baggage, new breed (of politicians) like us are different as our main struggle is to fight for the rights according to the Malaysia Agreement 1963."

Warisan won 23 out of 73 seats during the 16th state election. It is now left with only 19 seats with Warisan's Bugaya remaining vacant following the death of incumbent Datin Manis Muka Mohd Darah.

Apart from Mohammadin, Warisan saw Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob quit last month after Sebatik assemblyman Hassan A Gani Pg Amir did the same on Feb 25.
