KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has created a system for the local community to manage the varsity's innovation in sourcing for clean water supply. With the innovation synergy between UMS researchers and industrial partners from Syarikat Pembinaan Kiawayan Sdn. Bhd, the portable treated water gravity project could provide clean supply to 30 households at Kampung Rungus Nahaba, Kiulu, Tuaran near here. Its Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Prof Madya Dr Ramzah Dambul said the seven-month project, which began in July, was funded by the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry through the Malaysia Social Innovation grant. "In engineering, the membrane technology and gravity are being applied to ensure water is collected and filtered so it can be consumed straight from the water pipe.

"Apart from the technical aspect, the second innovation brought by UMS research is on creating a system for locals through establishing the management committee among villagers.

"This is to empower them in terms of skills in handling the user-friendly equipment so the technology is more sustainable and the community involved will also accept it," he said during a recent launching of knowledge-transferring on the Kg Rungus Nahaba water gravity supply project programme.

Ramzah added that science, technology and innovation were socio-economic drivers and solutions to various community problems in Sabah apart from being a game changer in various aspects under the Sabah Maju Jaya initiative and the 12th Malaysia Plan.

Therefore, he said UMS had many collaborations to carry out such innovation projects for the benefit of the people.

Meanwhile, project head Profesor Madya Dr Gaim James Lunkapis said the innovation at the village was merely using natural gravity and did not use any power supply.

The programme was launched by Sabah Rural Development minister Datuk Jahid Jahim.

Present were Sabah Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai and UMS Innovation and Commercialisation Management Centre director Dr Jidon Janaun.
