KOTA KINABALU: Everyone has to work together to address each other's insecurities to move Malaysia forward, says Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau.
The United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation president said while it was human to have insecurities, the deliberate exploitation of those emotions to fuel superiority and hatred was wicked and dangerous.
He added that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob must reign in the political exploitation of Muslims' insecurities to build a happy and prosperous Malaysian family.
"No family can survive if some siblings are constantly haunted by insecurities against other siblings.
"Certain segments of Muslims feel deeply insecure that others are out to insult their faith or confuse them.
"The Prime Minister must ensure that the Islamic spirit of religious freedom, "for you is your religion, for me is my religion", is truly practised in Malaysian Families," he said in a statement in conjunction with Deepavali celebration.
The Tuaran member of parliament also asked for a stop on the anti-alcohol campaign, from the Timah witchhunt to the partial alcohol ban in Kuala Lumpur.
He said those gestures were deeply insensitive to Borneo natives as well as other communities.
"That Muslims cannot drink alcohol does not mean that non-Muslims must be restricted from buying alcohol or consumption of alcohol must be hidden.
"Malaysia belongs to both Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
"Anyone who has forgotten this should pay a visit to the Batu Bersumpah (Oath Stone) on the social contract of religious freedom and allegiance to Malaysia, in Keningau, Sabah " he said.
Madius also asked the government to instruct the Attorney General's Chamber to withdraw its appeal against the High Court's ruling on March 10 this year that declared the Allah ban was unconstitutional.
