KOTA KINABALU: The government will work with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to study entrepreneurship development in the state.

State Industrial Development minister Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam said the research, which would begin in January next year, would take eight months to be completed.

"As a result of this study, a Sabah Entrepreneurship Development Transformation Action Plan 2023 - 2028 will be produced as a direction or guide for the implementation of entrepreneurship development programmes for all relevant agencies.

"This plan will also propose suitable industries and products in each district in Sabah by referring to the available natural resources.

"With this plan later, each region will have an industry or product identity that reflects the region," he said during the state assembly sitting.

Joachim, who is also Deputy Chief Minister, was responding to a question by Mohd Arshad Bistari (BN-Tempasuk) on funds and assistance given to entrepreneurs under the One Product One Village programme held at Tempasuk.

Introduced in 1992 and renamed to One District One Product (SDSI) in 2002, the programme is an economic development programm that contributes to the continuous increase in income and affects the well-being of the people.

Joachim said to differentiate the products from other industrial products, the ministry had set several criteria to involve the local community, unique products, creation of an economic value chain and job opportunities.

He added the state would always assist communities by providing equipment, courses or training, workshops, and participating in expos.
