RANAU: Community support and acknowledgment of local talents will help them strive for excellence, said district officer Syahrin Samsir.
He was referring to students of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kirokot, Areha Heavenea Azri, 11 and Jetty Lorrend, 12 together with their teacher Hallsen Justin, 33, who innovated face masks using plastic bottles, sponge and clothes.
Their innovation won a gold prize during the World Youth Invention and Innovation Award (WYIIA) in Indonesia; Organisation for Creativity, Innovation and Invention Promotion (OCIIP) in Nigeria and the Virtual Innovation Competition UiTM Kelantan International (VIC21), Malaysia.
Syahrin added while parents and schools have their roles in raising and educating children, the community should also take part in cheering and acknowledging students who won awards.
Despite the great innovation that can be made at the cost of RM3, it is learned that the kids were having difficulty in presenting the project in English.
SK Kirokot is located in the interiors of Sabah and during rainy days, it can only be accessed by four-wheel drive vehicles.
"We are here today to give recognition to both students as it was not easy for them to stand and speak a foreign language in front of non-Malaysians in other countries.
"It is definitely a challenge for them who are aged 11 and 12 to learn the language and have confidence," he said during a students and staff visit at the Sabah Tea Resort, here.
Sabah Tea manager Martin Kong, who hosted the celebration for them, said it was their corporate social responsibility to thank the children for winning the awards and making Ranau known.
"We are always open to schools that require support in any competitions and hope that more students from this district will make Sabah and Malaysia known globally."
