KOTA KINABALU: Everyone, especially the younger generaton, must work together to preserve the environment and mitigate the climate crisis, said Sabah Wetlands Conservation Society and Science officer Mohd Nurazmeel Mokhtar.
He said just like their peers in the developed nations, youths in Sabah are equally aware of environmental issues and do not want to sit back and watch others ruin the state's natural treasures.
"To the people who have the power to make decisions - we urge you to take action now.
"We, the children of Sabah will inherit this land from you. It is our given responsibility to continue to care, protect and conserve our natural resources and ecosystems, our rich biodiversity, our culture and heritage.
"We do not want the future generations to look at our beautiful and blessed state only through Google images or history books. This is why we believe we need to take actions against climate change now," he said.
The 28-year-old was speaking during the Sabah Climate Change International Conference here yesterday which provided a platform for youth to share their opinions and voices on the matter.
Nurazmeel's speech was based on responses received from Sabahan youths through Google questionnaires.
He said among the scientific and research community, relevant government agencies should engage in knowledge sharing with the public.
"Incorporate sustainable development in State planning and shifting towards green facilities and eco-friendly materials in schools, the public and even in private and government offices.
"Grants and funds should be available specifically to support the creation and implementation of climate change action related programmes," he added.
