LAHAD DATU: Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin has urged the federal government to speed up allocations for the Pan Borneo Highway in the state.
He said the state government has agreed to propose a private funding initiative for the 22 packages of the Pan Borneo Highway after the Pakatan Harapan government had failed to secure the sukuk (or bonds).
Bung, who is also the state Works Minister, said the aftermath left Sabah Pan Borneo to rely on annual infrastructure allocations of RM1 billion to complete only two packages per year.
He said It would mean that Sabah needed more than 20 years for the 22 packages to be completed when Sarawak has almost completed 80 per cent of its Pan Borneo Highway.
"The Finance minister, Works minister, federal ministers and (Prime Minister's Department) Economic Planning Unit should not sleep.
"Have the meetings as soon as possible as it is the rainy season and a lot of roads are damaged. Do fulfil promises to complete the first phase of the Pan Borneo project.
"The Malaysia Agreement 1963 will be meaningless if (Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku) Zafrul (Tengku Abdul Aziz) does not respect Sabah (by honouring the promises)," he said after launching a new water treatment plant project here.
Earlier, he said the state Works Ministry had planned several projects to increase water capacity in the district, particularly the town area.
Bung Moktar said among these projects were three mld-capacity Rural Water Supply at Dewata which will be completed this year; and 60 mld-phase 1 Lahad Datu water supply system expected to finish by the middle of next year.
For now, the water demand is 91 million of litres per day (mld) but the department can only supply 60 mld
