KINABATANGAN: The state government has approved RM250,000 to develop the Sukau Kinabatangan Tamu square here to attract more visitors.

State Tourism, Culture and Environment minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said by attracting more people to the place, it could help enhance the local economy.

He said the ministry is also planning to turn the place into a stopover destination that offers products based on arts and crafts and heritage of the local community.

"The ministry and Kinabatangan district council are now planning to upgrade and beautify the area and its facilities.

"The square used to be a place where various cultural programmes were held including the Damas festival organised by Bangsa Sungai Sabah Association," he said in a statement.

Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Sukau assemblyman said the cultural performances did not only attract local tourists but also foreigners especially from Europe.

Sukau Kinabatangan is located about 130 kilometres from Sandakan. It is a place where one can see wildlife such as pygmy elephants and Proboscis monkeys, among others.
