KOTA KINABALU: Hadinah Inah Basinau usually makes heads turn as she begins her hike at designated starting points.
The 41-year-old Sabahan also said that on certain occasions, even the person-in-charge of the hike advised against her dress code – a stretchable green baju kurung, deemed as unsuitable for such activities.
However, Hadinah has since convinced those concerned of her capabilities, and has been hiking in her baju kurung since 2016.
"There is no specific reason (for wearing a dress) as it is more of a self-challenge which has now become my trademark.
"Wearing a baju kurung helps me breathe better and be more organised as I have a consistent pace instead of pushing myself beyond my limit.
"To date, I have hiked more than 30 times including hills and mountains in Sabah, Bukit Gasing in the peninsular Malaysia, Penawangan peak in Indonesia for the 20 Hike Challenge, and Silipat Mountain in Thailand among others," she told the New Straits Times.
The government servant with the Sabah Health Department also reached Mount Kinabalu peak with her baju kurung for the first time on Jan 31, 2018 and recently conquered the Gurkha Hut.
The man-made hut lies beyond the 4,000m Oyayubi peak at the western ridge of the mountain which takes extra hours of hiking from Low's Peak.
She described Gurkha Hut as another level of difficulty as she had to endure the coldness for about 10 hours from Timpohon Gate at 10am.
"Due to the bad weather and rain, it became colder and the rock face was slippery, thus I had to be extra careful to walk as it was dark where we only had head torches as our source of light.
Hadinah said she will be hiking at Mountain Queshan in Taiwan this year and hopes to conquer Mount Everest in the near future.
