KOTA KINABALU: A RM188 million project to build 513 housing quarters for soldiers at the Lok Kawi camp here is expected to be completed within three years.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup said the construction, which also include support and work buildings, will ensure that the army personnel will have better and more comfortable accommodations for their families.

He said the infrastructure development demonstrates the government's commitment to the welfare of army personnel and retirees.

Arthur said the project, which involves public facilities, is meant for the people's benefit.

"Therefore, the project implementation has to fulfil several specifications and criteria in the contract. This is to ensure that during handover, the project is a quality one as well as in accordance with the timeframe and costs," he said during a letter of acceptance (LOA) submission event at the Lok Kawi camp here.

Arthur said in the issuance of the LOAs, the Works Ministry reflected the government's acknowledgment of the construction sector as an important driver of the post Covid-19 economic recovery plan.

"The economic cycle in the construction industry will provide a substantial multiplier value to the national economy and eventually benefit Malaysians.

"The ministry has issued 137 LOAs worth RM4.6 billion, which exceeded the key performance indicator under the 'Malaysian Family' aspiration. As for 2021, there are 392 LOAs worth RM18.6 billion," he said.
