KOTA KINABALU: Motorists, especially those using the Telupid road, will have to bear with the poor conditions for another two years.
Sabah Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin said the lifespan of that stretch of road expired in 2018.
"When it (the lifespan) is finished, the road will definitely be damaged. It will take millions of ringgit to upgrade the entire road whereas there is an ongoing Pan Borneo project there.
"If we spend between RM200 million to RM300 million for the upgrading and eventually have to dismantle it (to make way for Pan Borneo), we will be wasting money.
"I also passed the same road, and also suffered heartache and had my car tyres burst.
"But there is no choice. Be patient, after two and a half years we will enjoy a more comfortable travel," he said during the state assembly sitting, adding that the Ministry will prioritise work package (WP) number 28, 29 and 30 for that stretch of road where progress is between 0 to 6.25 per cent.
Bung, who is also the state Deputy Chief Minister, was answering questions from appointed assemblyman Aliakbar Gulasan on the progress of the Pan Borneo Highway project and the upgrading of existing roads.
Over the past few years, road users had been complaining about Telupid's poor road conditions. Some even equate the road as a "moon surface" due to potholes that caused cars to breakdown and even accidents.
The main intersection in Telupid is a roundabout heading in four different directions: Sandakan, Tongod, Kota Kinabalu and Telupid.
Earlier, Bung said four - WP5, WP15, WP21, and WP27- out of 15 packages of the Pan Borneo Highway are expected to be completed this year.
"Out of 15 work packages, there are several work packages experiencing delays due to problems in land acquisition and utility diversion."
