KOTA KINABALU: There are less than a million people who are non-citizens in Sabah, said state Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
He said the state had received the initial 2020 census on the people and housing in Sabah from the Statistics Department.
"Based on the report, the total population in the state is 3,418,785.
"Of that number, 810,443 or 23.7 per cent are non-citizens while there are 2,608,324 Malaysians in Sabah," he said, denying Api-Api assemblyman Datuk Christina Liew's allegations that there are a million immigrants in the state.
Hajiji, who is also state Finance Minister, was winding up during the state assembly sitting.
He added the state government would continue to tackle the long-standing issues regarding illegal immigrants through a special committee.
The committee, set up on Feb 16, is led by deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan and will provide recommendations to the cabinet within three months.
As for the safety in the east coast of Sabah, Hajiji said the federal government is planning to set up a General Operations Force (GOF) brigade in Lahad Datu, a battalion in Kunak, and new control posts at Kuala Sg. Manalunan, Kinabatangan and Kuala Maruap, Lahad Datu, as well as Forward Operating Bases (FOB) off Banggi island in Kudat and Mabul island off Semporna.
