KOTA KINABALU: The places under the care of Sabah Parks are beginning to see signs of recovery with tourist arrivals.

Its director Dr Maklarin Lakim said ahead of the country entering the transition to endemicity phase next month, some positive effects are already showing.

"There are 113,309 visitors this year compared to just 13,853 people last year.

"We have opened our nine parks to domestic tourists since Sept 16 last year until today, without having to close them (due to Covid-19 prevention measures)," he said, during the 2022 Sabah Parks Board of Trustee Appreciation ceremony here last night.

Maklarin added that Sabah Parks had gone through ups and downs throughout the two-year Covid-19 pandemic.

Their revenue has decreased to RM11.7 million in 2021 as compared to RM14.8 million in 2020 due to the closure of tourist destinations during the implementation of the various Movement Control Orders.

The number of visitors also decreased, with 403,469 in 2020 and 269,819 visitors in 2021.

"Despite these obstacles, we are experiencing positive changes in terms of the recovery of flora and fauna, either at the marine parks or the mountains, as there is less human interruption on the ecosystem of the parks that we are protecting.

Present at the event was Assistant Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.
