KOTA KINABALU: A simulation exercise at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) will be held tomorrow before the reopening of international borders next week.

"On March 24, Malaysia Airports, the Health Ministry and MyEG or known as Malaysia Electronic Government, an agency used by the Ministry of Transport* will conduct a simulation at the KKIA. Also taking part in the exercise are state tourism industry players.

"The simulation aims to see how security protocols can be adapted in preparation for the reopening of borders," said Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin during the winding-up at the state assembly.

He said the ministry had been awaiting the announcement on the reopening of borders and ensuring the preparation among tourism players are at the highest level to ensure better economic growth.

"I have also asked for the standard operating procedures (SOP) to be standardised with guidelines at the federal level.

"The same decisions for state and federal levels will prevent confusion and give ample opportunity and time for operators before visitors come in.

"My ministry is confident of the readiness of tour operators in welcoming domestic and international tourists in new norms and with strict SOPs."

Jafry also gave his assurances that this year the ministry would continue to give and introduce marketing stimulus packages and implement a comprehensive strategy.

He said the ministry would also prioritise the environment and cultural heritage as assets that have to be protected and conserved for tourism.
