KOTA KINABALU: Asmarina Umar was born with a rare condition which makes it difficult for her to discern small objects, hence making reading a hugely difficult task.

However, with the aid of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), she managed to overcome the difficulty and graduated with a Bachelor of Social Science (History) with honours.

The 25-year-old Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) student attributes her success to the varsity, which had helped throughout the duration of her undergraduate studies.

Asmarina, who hails from Semporna, said UMS has been assisting students with disabilities to undergo their campus life without feeling neglected.

"The university, through its People with Disabilities management centre, assists in the transportation and placement of suitable rooms at the residential colleges.

"The centre always keeps touch with us to ensure that we are in good condition," she said.

Asmarina's condition means she has difficulty with seeing small font size letters.

"I am grateful to the lecturers who are always considerate.

"Upon learning of my condition, they prepared learning materials using large font size so that it would be easy for me to learn," she said.

Asmarina, who is the fourth of six siblings, aims to further her studies via a postgraduate diploma in teaching.

She encouraged others who are in a similar situation not to be discouraged in pursuing their dreams.

"I also draw inspiration from others who are visually-impaired like me who have achieved success.

"If they can, then I too can definitely succeed."
