KOTA KINABALU: The Jesselton Artisan Market is ushering in a mini festival this weekend as Sabah enters the month-long Kaamatan or harvest festival.
Organiser Aaron Lam said the two-day weekend market is aimed at celebrating North Borneo's indigenous arts and culture.
"It is also to create awareness among the urban youth of our cultural heritage and roots through the various exhibitions, talks, film screenings and workshops.
"This will be our first market after the loosening of standard operating procedures.
"But as usual, the market usually attracts around 5,000 to 6,000 people over the weekend. With these activities we are hosting, there will definitely be a bigger crowd," he added.
Held at The Walk, Riverson here, Lam said the market would have a series of showcases on traditional crafts by Sang Tukang, woodcut arts by collective artists Pangrok Sulap, and the sale of different types of rice by Redefine Collections, among others.
Sabah Human Development and Empowerment Association's Jared Abdul Rahman will also be giving a talk on the representations and misrepresentations of Sabahan art.
"(Artists) Adam and Frida will be talking about their adventure and findings as they continue to rediscover their cultural roots through their travels and experiments."
There will also be workshops on custom batik tote bags, "tulun" bobblehead, brass cuff forging, watercolour floral wreaths, wicker baskets, ethnic language, Iranun textile weaving and traditional food preparation.
Apart from that, traditional cuisines, attires and accessories will also be available.
