KOTA KINABALU: Nur Qisya Arissa Fadzly prefers to spend her spare time including on weekends running, especially in the forest.

Describing it as a hobby, the girl fondly known as Echa, either runs six days a week, or goes cycling and swimming.

Today, the 11-year-old ran with 158 runners in the 9-kilometre (KM) category for the Borneo Ultra Trail Marathon (BUTM) held in Kiulu near here.

Accompanied by her father, she clocked 1:11:14 and emerged champion for the Youth Female category.

"Apart from running as a hobby, I joined this BUTM because of the beautiful trail and I could also run with other elite runners," said Nur Qisya.

BUTM, which will count towards the International Trail Running Association (ITRA) elite runner rating, also saw 815 participants running 106KM, 55 KM and 32KM yesterday.

Nur Qisya's mother Alizah Abdullah said her youngest child started climbing and hiking from a very young age.

"As young as three-years-old, she was following us into the forest. At the age of seven, Echa began to run races.

"To date, she has participated in about 15 trail and road events held in Sabah, Labuan, Brunei Darussalam and Perak. The longest distance was 14 kilometres.

"As she is still in the youth category, most of the time, her father will accompany and become her pacer," she said, adding Echa had also climbed Mount Kinabalu twice and Mount Wakid once.

The first place for the 106KM run was won by Hishashi Kitamura (overall male category) and Rejlen James (overall female); while in the 55KM Wilsen Singgin(male) and Shamiera Auther (female) emerged as champions and in the 32KM Doimis Mojimbun(male) and Sarah Carnwath (female) were crowned the winners.
