PAPAR: The Papar dam is one solution to the state's water woes, said Limbahau assemblyman Datuk Juil Nuatim.

"There is not a day when I don't get complaints related to lack of water supply.

"Some residents, especially in Kinarut area, have gone up to two weeks of water disruption, while (a factory) at an industrial area in Lok Kawi has to fork out up to RM4,000 a month for water, when it used to pay RM600 monthly," he said after chairing the district-level Kaamatan carnival meeting here.

Papar dam, aimed to meet increasing water demands from the west coast of Sabah, was mooted over 10 years ago to be built at Moyog (Penampang) as the Kaiduan Dam project.

"When there is a development, we definitely need water and electricity. Investors ask whether electricity and water are available. If not, they won't come to Sabah.

"There might be people objecting to it, but if it is to be built in Papar, we will be lucky as it can attract tourism just like how Sarawak is benefitting from the dam there.

"Sarawak used to see villagers strongly protesting against building the dam. But now, Sarawak is more advanced. Many visitors have come (to visit their dam) and the state also supplies energy to Indonesia.

"We need this dam; however it is up to the state government to decide whether to implement it."

As stated on the International Hydropower Association (IHA) website, in 2020, Sarawak's large hydropower plants include the 2,400 MW Bakun Hydroelectric Plant and another 944 MW Murum Plant.
