KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Youth Council (SYC) aims to increase political literacy among the youth in the state.

Its president Abqaree Fawwaz Abekan said that they are planning to engage 10,000 young people to represent their state legislative constituencies in the Sabah Youth Assembly.

The SYC assembly is a simulation programme of the Sabah legislative assembly, providing an opportunity for youth to voice their views and ideas in a simulated parliamentary session scheduled to take place at the end of October.

The session will involve 73 SYC members who won elections in each state constituency in Sabah.

"The political literacy among youth in this state is currently at around 30 per cent, and this is a cause for concern for the future of democracy in the state.

"SYC is the best platform to rekindle the interest of Sabah's youth in politics. We want this group to always feel that their voices are heard by the government.

"As a starting point, this year, we aim to involve 10,000 young people as either voters or candidates running in their respective state constituencies," he said in a statement.

Abqaree also said the resolutions passed by SYC members at the Sabah State Assembly Building will later be submitted to the Sabah Youth and Sports ministry.

He said through the youth and sports minister, the recommendations would also be handed to Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor as a reference for the state government in shaping policies and strategies in line with the aspirations of the 2.2 million youth in the state.

The registration for candidates and voters aged 15 to 35, which began on Sept 2 will close on Sept 30t with the voting process taking place from Oct 2 to 7.

The announcement of the winners for each constituency will be made on Oct 7 at 8.30pm through an official live broadcast on the SYC Facebook page.
