KOTA KINABALU: Diving enthusiasts in Sabah are gearing up for an exhilarating season as the waters off the coast come alive with the majestic presence of whale sharks.
Richard Swann, a professional diving course director, who shared his encounter yesterday with whale sharks on social media said that quality footage definitely could inspire divers to join the search adventure.
He said that he spotted two yesterday, one is about 4 metres and another could reach up to 9 metres.
"During this time, many would otherwise stay home as the cooler water and poor visibility can be off putting.
“But the reality of images will convince many to join the search! It's wonderful to see them.
"I am no less excited than when I saw my first... they are truly enchanting fish,” said the managing director of Downbelow Marine and Wildlife Adventures, who has been diving since 1993.
Swann said that mid-February and the end of March is the peak season to see the whale sharks off Kota Kinabalu waters.
For those eager to witness these gentle giants firsthand, Swann recommended exploring the marine parks around the five islands as they have bays where the krill gather and thus whale sharks would likely be there.
He added the days around the full moon offer added advantages as the ocean becomes exceptionally productive, increasing the chances of sightings.
“Be patient and consider a day of searching for fun in itself rather than being disappointed if they do not see it.
“Snorkeling is actually the best experience during these days as quick reactions are vital if jumping in to see them.
"When diving it’s less likely to actually see them but obviously still very possible.”
