PENAMPANG: Penampang member of parliament Datuk Ewon Benedick announced that a proposal to reduce parking fees in Donggongon has been submitted to the Penampang Municipal Council. He said that a new gazette for lower parking rates can be implemented next year. "I have listened to complaints from Penampang residents and users regarding parking fees. I have shared my views with the President of the Municipal Council, urging a rate reduction. “I know the President and the Council are aware, and hopefully next year we will see a new gazette with slightly lower parking rates, especially given the current economic challenges and anticipated congestion due to the temporary relocation of Tamu Donggongon," he said. Ewon made these remarks after presenting canopies worth over RM66,000 to 434 small traders and hawkers temporarily relocated near the Datuk Peter Mojuntin Memorial for Tamu Donggongon’s upgrade work. He also supports the Municipal Council's efforts to create new revenue sources, including parking fees, to develop Donggongon and Penampang. "Without new revenue, developing Penampang town would be difficult. However, we must also consider and address user feedback appropriately," he added. Ewon said that the parking fee agreement was established before his tenure, and he has urged the newly appointed Council members to review users' views carefully. On other development projects in Penampang funded by federal and state governments, Ewon pledged to continue monitoring their progress, including the Terian-Buayan road upgrade, which is discussed monthly in the District Development Action Committee meetings led by the Council President. Ewon also thanked council President Francis Chong for ensuring monthly discussions of government-funded projects, including the delayed completion of the Penampang Stadium and the SESB substation, currently being addressed through the district committee.
