KOTA KINABALU: The Coroner's Court was told that it was common for students, and even some teachers at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha to use insulting words.
Datuk Ram Singh, who is representing one of the children charged in connection with the late Zara Qairina Mahathir case, said this was revealed by a child witness today.
"I don't want to say what those words are, but they are not becoming for a religious school.
"(According to a child witness) the teachers also did not scold them for using such words," he told the media after proceedings yesterday.
Ram's colleague, Joan Goh, added that a witness also testified that at times, some teachers also used those words when scolding students.
However, Goh said her team did not further ask how many teachers would use those insulting words.
Shahlan Jufri, who is representing Zara Qairina's family, said an earlier session involving the fifth witness revealed that the habit of senior students scolding or reprimanding harshly was a common culture among hostel students.
"Junior students were expected to go through this because their seniors had also experienced the same in their earlier years," he said
