KOTA KINABALU: The coroner's court was told today that the late Zara Qairina Mahathir had allowed her roommate to read her dark green diary.

The 17th child witness said she was only a casual friend of Zara Qairina and was not particularly close her.

"(The diary) contained Zara Qairina's personal thoughts about a friend.

"She confirmed that Zara Qairina aspired to be a 'Badar', a role that required discipline and memorisation of Quranic surahs.

"Zara Qairina also idolised one of the senior 'Badar' members," lawyers representing Zara Qairina said.

The lawyers are Rizwandean M Borhan, Shahlan Jufri, Mohd Syarulnizam Mohd Salleh, Mohd Luqman Syazwan Zabidi, Farrah Nasser and Elhanan James.

Meanwhile, lawyer Joan Goh, who is repsenting one of the five children charged in Zara Qairina's case, said the witness testified before coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan that she had noticed dried blood stains on a sheet in the diary.

"Early in the year, Zara Qairina showed the witness cut marks on her arm — 'barcode' scars that she had made herself.

"Zara Qairina did not say how or when she did the 'barcode'. She had shown it to the witness when both of them were in a toilet at the dormitory," said Goh.

On July 15, around 9pm, after revision class, the witness returned to the dorm with other students. The witness washed her clothes in the washroom and returned to her room around 10pm.

"Before sleeping, she saw Zara Qairina sitting on the floor in front of her locker but did not notice what she was doing."

Zara Qairina later wanted to borrow a pair of scissors from the witness at 11pm, when the lights were switched off.

However, the witness' scissors was with someone else.

"After that, the witness saw Zara Qairina leaving the room while she went back to sleep," Goh said.
