Address "palauh" in Kota Kinabalu city, says Parti Warisan rep

KOTA KINABALU: The increasing presence of individuals commonly referred to as “Palauh” would affect city's image, residents' comfort and visitors' experience.

Parti Warisan Api-Api assemblyman Loi Kok Liang said that during a meeting between his party's leaders and the Chief Minister’s Department, they were informed that the current approach adopted by the authorities involves a “rescue and placement” mechanism.

Individuals apprehended from the streets are sent to temporary shelters where they undergo counselling, skills training, and identity verification procedures.

They are placed under supervision for approximately three months before further action is determined.

“The framework exists. What is crucial now is consistent enforcement and sustained implementation,” he said in a statement.

Loi observed that the recent increase in visible cases suggests that enforcement efforts need to be intensified.

He urged the City Hall and relevant agencies to enhance operational frequency and inter-agency coordination, particularly in high-traffic and tourist areas.

“As an elected representative, I do not hold enforcement powers. However, I have the responsibility to monitor and ensure that public concerns are conveyed and followed up.”

He stressed that the matter requires continuous attention and structured action to safeguard Kota Kinabalu’s urban order and reputation.

Loi also encouraged members of the public to channel information through proper reporting mechanisms to assist authorities in carrying out their duties more effectively.

“This issue must not be ignored. It requires ongoing supervision, stronger coordination, and firm action,” he added.
